CBD+THC and the Herpes Simplex Virus

The Herpes Simplex Virus(HSV) is a widespread virus that can cause ailments such as cold sores, genital herpes, chickenpox and mono. Studies have shown 50%-90% of the population carry either HSV 1 or HSV 2 and as of today it remains incurable. HSV is a retrovirus which means it is able to lay dormant in your body without detection from your immune system. It does this by inserting itself into your DNA. Even though there is no permanent cure, there are ways to suppress the unpleasant symptoms. Symptoms include; swollen lymph nodes, flu like symptoms, headaches, blisters, inflammation, redness, cracked skin, itching and pain.

CBD can help with ALL of these symptoms. CBD is known to be a natural anti-inflammatory. A study by the London school of Pharmacology showed CBD has great capability to fend off foreign pathogens in the body. Applying CBD topically to sores will help decrease redness, itching, pain and cracking skin. Ingesting CBD through tincture, capsule or edible is also beneficial to HSV symptoms, helping with pain, enlarged lymph nodes, headaches and also just getting rid of the general blah feeling that comes with an outbreak.

THC does not suppress the detectable symptoms of HSV but since the first study by the University of South Florida in 1991 many more studies have confirmed that THC lowered the ability of the virus to cause an outbreak by 80%. THC inhibits HSV by targeting the ORF50 protein which is essential for HSV to come out of its dormant state. So while THC does not decrease symptoms during an outbreak, regular use can drastically decrease the frequency of outbreaks.
